Our base is in Jefferson City, and the county lines — the Missouri River along the north, the Osage coming in from the east, farm ground rolling away to the south and west — describe almost exactly the ground our crews cover in an ordinary week. That matters more than it sounds. A local crew is not paying for a two-hour drive in your quote, and a service call in the middle of December is a short trip rather than a scheduling problem.

The county is not one kind of property, either, which is half of what makes the work interesting. Downtown Jefferson City has masonry storefronts and century-old houses. The west side has long rooflines, tall entries and mature yard trees. South and east of town, out through Wardsville, Taos and Brazito, it turns to farmhouses, ranch homes on acreage and outbuildings that look tremendous lit and are almost never in a catalog’s plan. Further out toward Russellville, Lohman, Centertown and Eugene, a single well-lit house can be visible from a mile of open road.
